Nerds

Well well it's seems it has been a long time between drinks so I thought that I would catch up with what's been happening.

I have rediscovered my love of Nerds. Not people Nerds but the candy. Boring story but went to the shops with the parents to check out this bulk buy place and there was confectionary room that was Heaven. So I went over board and brought a carton of 24.

Small snippets from gigs that I can remember

Man Man @ Oxford Arts – This was AMAZING! I had downed 2 boxes of Nerds and a large iced coffee before I got to the venue, once I caught up with friends they had a box of lollies from Fizzers, Yappo’s, some sherbet things and Hubba Bubba so the night was kicking off on a high.

I was happy that Man Man had decided to do a side show however I think that the ticket price was a bit much seeing as they have only released one album (Rabbit Habits) here in Australia.

The crowd was small and only a few people were dancing, my friend and I hung at the back where there was room to spin and karate chop without hitting people.

Man Man was supported by The John Steel Singers.

TZU Vs The Vasco Era @ Hordern – This was for the Red Bull Soundclash the first in Australia. It was a great night. At the beginning people were dancing to the mix of Leeroy Brown, a group that had just come from a work Christmas party kept the floor lively with their antics. One in particular bless his cotton socks was lapping up the attention but after awhile you can only chuckle happily at the same dance move the first 5 times then it just gets annoying.

Even with Vasco claiming that TZU would probably take it out because ‘everyone loves hip hop and it’s easier to dance to’ it was good to see that they still pulled out all the stops to make it an entertaining night.

How in the world Sid (lead singer) stayed standing after drinking a bottle of Jack straight by himself I’ll never know. With costume changes and a few jokes here and there even the one heckler wasn’t going to stop the love that the crowd had from Vasco.

TZU gave as good as they got, a few stumbles here and there but all together it was a good set. There boy band moves were a laugh but not enough to pull them over the finish line.

Urgh one complaint dancers for The Vasco Era were really bad! There were people in crowd booing them.

Homebake – Too bloody hot! Homebake held a turning point for me, the band Sparkadia was never a favorite of mine and I can sometimes be heard muttering for people away from one of their shows. To my surprise I went to go watch them in the Hoey tent and didn’t mind them in the end, still not the biggest fan but I won’t be so negative about them in the future.

For me the day was a bit of a bore not enough meat to the lineup so I found myself just sitting around not listening to any band. Will I go next year? Maybe not.

I'm going to the zoo tomorrow

Yes not that exciting to most but I haven't been to Taronga zoo for years. I know that the monkeys are still going to look like monkeys and the zebras will still have stripes BUT I'm going to be armed with a camera, a great friend and waay too much energy.

While my friend was taking photos of Bambi, I got stuck on the mushrooms

While looking at the Meerkats and guy came up and started chatting to me the proclaimed that he had dubbed one of these guys "Stumpy" (Because it had no tail)

This guy was lounging in the Wallaby Zone

and shortly after this picture was taken, this guy hoped over to where the above roo was and I'm sure there was going to be a rumble. Fortunately I was pulled away before any trouble started...

Darling Harbour Jazz & Blues Fest

C.W Stoneking...

I had been dying to see this man since I first heard his music, unfortunately his gigs always landed on nights I had already made plans. So I was happy that I was able to see him this weekend and that it was free, what's not to love about a free show. CW is consider by many a blues and Jazz artist but I'm sure he will add to those genres.

King Hokum is the album and I was thrilled that he performed Dodo Blues and Don't Go Dancin Down The Darktown Strutter's Ball. I'm not normally a fan of singers talking about there songs but CW gave us the story behind the songs and gave them weight. For Don't go dancin he spoke about a friend who had visited a psychic before his wedding and she told to stay away from a bar called Strutter's Ball, of course this guy when he goes back outside, sees the bar and goes in, and 6 months CW sees him on a corner in a dress unable to speak about what happened to him at Strutter's Ball. CW sings the song in monotone voice that plods along and when he is joined by the trumpet, trombone and doublebass it's a sad and wary figure that comes to mind walking down a deary street.

Now for Dodo Blues he explains opens in a market with two sellers and a Dodo bird, it's the voices that CW uses for each character in the songs that gives it charm.

I urge you to listen to this album or if you have the opportunity go see him. The man is a fantastic songwriter and his music is delightful and I can't wait til Jungle Music comes out.

So I have to thank the organisers of the Darling Harbour Jazz and Blues fest because I may have had to wait many more months before I saw him at a gig.
